How to play Desert Expedition
Desert Expedition is a top-down crossing from the west edge of a desert to a caravan camp on the east. A sun clock runs through the day: water burns slowly at dawn, fast at noon and slowly again toward dusk. Open sand is the straight line but fully exposed. Canyons are shaded, which cuts water loss in half, but they wind around. Dunes are slow going. Oases refill the canteen and wells top it up, and neither is ever on the direct path.
A sandstorm front sweeps in from the west behind you at a steady pace, so resting in shade until the heat passes is a real option but never a free one. Running dry or being caught by the storm is a collapse: you wake at the last cairn with a little water. The third collapse ends the expedition.
There are five crossings. Each is longer and hotter than the last, with fewer oases and a faster storm, so the choice between the fast exposed line and the slow shaded one tightens every time.
