How to play Forest Survival
Forest Survival leaves you lost in the woods for eight days with nothing to eat but what you can gather — and every edible plant here has a poisonous lookalike. Bunched blueberries grow near lone nightshade berries sitting on yellow star-shaped cups. Ridged chanterelles grow near clumps of gilled jack-o'-lanterns, star-flowered wild garlic near bell-flowered lily of the valley, and husked hazelnuts near glossy buckeyes with a pale eye. The poisonous twin is always the commoner one, and always the one with more calories.
Each day brings a new clearing and eight actions. Picking a plant costs one. Testing a plant you do not know also costs one: it tells you for certain, but a taste of something poisonous makes you ill. Your field guide starts torn, knowing only blueberries and jack-o'-lanterns, and fills in as you learn; known plants are marked wherever they grow. At camp you decide what in the basket you will actually eat.
Poison costs health and so does going to bed hungry, while a well-fed night restores a little. The nights get colder, so you need more food every day, and the safe plants thin out while the poisonous ones spread.
