How to play Kingdom Builder

Kingdom Builder gives you a map of meadow, forest, water and hills and three buildings at a time. Place one, and what it is worth depends entirely on what ends up beside it: cottages want other cottages and hate workshops, workshops want forest, farms want water, chapels want a hill, markets simply want neighbours, and wells want cottages and water.

Every empty plot shows what the building you have chosen would score there right now, so the puzzle is not guessing the rules — it is that filling one plot changes the value of every plot around it, and the three buildings on offer are rarely the three you wanted.

There are five villages, and the crown names a score for each. Later maps have less water and more scattered hills while the target climbs faster than the extra plots do, so the easy points run out. Fall short and you lose a life and start another village.

Objective

Fill each village with buildings arranged so their adjacency bonuses beat the score the crown demands.

Features

  • Six buildings with adjacency rules that push against each other
  • Every empty plot previews what the chosen building would score
  • Terrain — water, forest and hills — that some buildings need
  • Five villages with rising targets and rougher ground
  • Three lives; falling short of a target costs one
