How to play Dark Forest
Dark Forest gives you a torch, a compass and a note. The note tells you the way to the cabin one landmark at a time: from the old well, the scarecrow is so many paces north-east; from the scarecrow, the shrine is so many paces east; and on through the standing stones, the hollow oak and the rest. The directions were right when somebody wrote them.
The trouble is that nothing in this forest stays where it is unless someone is watching it. Every landmark outside your torch beam creeps slowly through the trees, and only freezes while the light is on it. So you walk the way the note says, counting paces, sweeping the beam across the dark ahead, and when you catch the landmark in the light you keep it there until you reach it. Tie a ribbon round it and it stays put; then the next line of the note begins.
You are not alone out there. Pairs of eyes glint in the dark and close in faster than you can walk. Put the beam on them and they back off and vanish, but every moment the torch spends on them is a moment it is not holding the landmark you were following. Get caught and you run blind back to the last landmark you tied a ribbon to; get caught three times and the forest keeps you. Each of the three nights has a longer note, landmarks that creep faster and more eyes at once.
