How to play Equation Solver

Equation Solver puts an equation on a balance and never asks you to type the answer. Instead you choose operations — add or subtract a number, multiply or divide, or move an x term — and each one is applied to both pans at once, so the balance can never tip. Get x on its own and the equation is solved.

The operations on offer always include the useful next steps, mixed in with operations that are perfectly legal but lead nowhere, so choosing the right one is the whole lesson. Every step you have taken is listed, and undo is free.

There are eight equations, from x + 4 = 9 up to equations with x on both sides and negative numbers. Each has a par — the fewest operations that solve it — and allows three moves over par before the equation is lost, which costs one of three hearts. Solving at par scores the most.

Objective

Isolate x in eight equations using as few balanced operations as possible.

Features

  • A balance that always applies operations to both sides
  • Useful steps mixed with legal ones that do not help
  • Par for every equation, set by the fewest possible steps
  • Free undo and a running list of your steps
  • Eight equations up to x on both sides with negatives
